This is the Ivy League

As I’ve said before, there are few things sexier than vegetarianism, so how can I help but plug PETA’s “Sexiest Vegetarian” poll (h/t Largehearted Boy)?

On the male side I voted for Ted Leo, mostly because he is one intense dude, though if I could pick the 28 year old Paul McCartney he would win in a landslide. On the female side I voted for Amber Benson, though it’s tough to rule out Kristen Bell (speaking of her, how much does it suck that Veronica Mars got canceled? A lot, that’s how much). But if there was any doubt, this scene convinced me (and it’s a pretty darn good song, too):

Talking about this also reminds me that I never got around to reviewing Nellie McKay’s new record Pretty Little Head, which finally got released last fall after a long fight with the record execs. The bad news is that it doesn’t offer much more than Get Away from Me. The good news is that it is just about as good as Get Away from Me, which is actually pretty significant for such a young artist who loves to experiment with as many different styles as possible. She has demonstrated her ability to consistently produce good records even as she plays around. It actually very narrowly missed out from making my list of favorite albums for the year, which makes my failure to write about it until now all the more inexplicable.

The best song is “Columbia is Bleeding,” coincidentally on the subject of animal rights, though the the almost-punk “Real Life” scuttles the myth of suburban pleasantries as well as anything in recent days, and the aptly titled “Long and Lazy River” is just about perfect for a quiet summer afternoon.
