The year in a rearview mirror

It’s Sunday, so that means it’s time for me to say something provocative. So here goes: 2010 has been a pretty miserable year for new music. Obviously, there’s been a lot of stuff I like. But as I think about my likely top 5 records for the year, I note that four of them are from bands who have produced at least one record in the last few years that was superior. That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for the year.

Are there secret good albums out there I don’t know about? If you’ve got suggestions, please leave a comment and let me know. I’ve still got a couple weeks to come across something that will really blow me away before I have to declare the year a failure.

I mostly agree. We just posted our list, though, so you may find some goodies there. I hope.

Yeah, your list was the one that finally convinced me I actually need to listen to Janelle Monae. I’d heard a few songs and thought they were good, but only now have actually picked up the whole album and listened to it straight through. It’s not quite #1 material, but yeah, it’s much better than I expected.

Have you heard the new Radio dept? Seems like it would be right up your alley.

    Local Natives?

Terry, I hadn’t heard the Radio Dept record but you’re right; I love it.

Brent, I listened to a couple of their songs a long while ago, and wasn’t impressed enough to come back. But I’ve heard enough good press now that I feel like I should go listen with a more attentive ear.

Glad to hear it made you listen to Janelle, haha. I LOVE The Radio Dept., and definitely enjoy Local Natives. But, to me, that album is 2009 material, I think it was officially re-released in 2010 for label purposes, but unsure exactly…
